Stowe, Vermont - The Current is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of Timothy Curtis’s work from January 16 - April 10, 2025. The exhibition will open with a reception and artist talk on Thursday, January 16, from 5-7pm. Hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be provided at the Opening. Attendance is free and fully accessible to all.

We are honored to introduce Timothy Curtis, a rising self-taught artist whose original work and keen passion have created a strong demand for his paintings.

Curtis was first introduced to the arts via graffiti writing as a young child in Philadelphia. While incarcerated for seven-and-a-half years, he immersed himself in studying art history, drawing, and painting. Building on this foundation, he formed a mural painting crew consisting of artists sentenced to life in prison. Curtis and several other prisoners led the crew in creating colorful and educational murals around the prison campus. Their focus was to motivate, inspire, and add life and energy to the prisoners’ experience. The mural project was the first program of its kind in the Pennsylvania State Correctional System. Following his release, Curtis moved to New York City, where he established a focused studio practice in late 2015.

With his background as a talented mark-maker, Curtis’s influence as a graffiti writer is seen in his pictorial canvases, bright with color and clear brush strokes that, at first impression, appear decorative and aesthetically joyful. Yet beyond the appeal, there is more. The work takes its cue from Curtis' rich and storied experiences, combined with his constant inquiries and the connections he sees in this world. From work about incarceration and psychoanalysis to an investigation into the relationship between 19th-century stoneware and graffiti art, his work is highly intelligent, thought-provoking, and researched, as evidenced in this exhibition.

Timothy Curtis: The Painters’ Hands is the first time Curtis will publicly present the start of his thesis that a distinctive thread of influence stretches over 200 years in one region. This inquiry examines not only the aesthetic mark-making and inherent symbolism but the ability art has to transform lives.

At 5:30pm, during the opening reception, Curtis will connect the dots between Pennsylvania Dutch stoneware of the 1860s in Philadelphia, 1960s-1970s graffiti writing in the notorious Kensington area of the city, and the genesis of his own artwork. The exhibition will display the original stoneware from the 1860s and new paintings and sculptures by Curtis, along with a section devoted to celebrating the lives and work of 1960s-1970s Philadelphia graffiti writers.

This exhibition will be accompanied by a series of community events, including experts from each era represented in the exhibition and a workshop on graffiti writing taught by Timothy Curtis to local middle school students.
