Chinese American Arts Council/Gallery 456 is pleased to present Wu Wangshu: Perception, on view from December 1, 2023 through December 21, 2023.

“Perception” presents a series of works that defy conventional art styles, moving beyond the constraints of abstract expressionism and minimalism. Instead, the artists choose to retain traces of painting, creating a thought provoking dialogue where each piece becomes a self-inquiry through art. As the first chapter in a trilogy, it’s centered around “discovering the surface, engaging with the surface, and establishing a harmonious sensation with it.” The exhibition encourages viewers to uncover the intricacies of everyday life, creating a splendid connection with the artwork’s surface. The artists believe in a close connection between the external and internal worlds, with art serving as the link between these realms. Between Wu Wangshu's inner self and willpower, observation, and comprehension, she discovers her relationship and meaning within this world. She listens to the voices of nature and human life, merging the masculine and feminine within everyone, the sun and the moon, water and fire. For the artist, the soul perpetually engages in internal creation. She sees the soul as part of an individual, with internal creation being a crucial aspect of relating to the world and nature. This is an artistic journey about freedom, more than just an art exhibition, it's an immersive experience. Through a deep

exploration of "Perception," Wu Wangshu guides the audience deeper, making every stroke of the brush a moment of introspection and enlightenment. It's about discovering the wonderful resonance between the inner and outer worlds, leading the audience into a visual symphony.

Artist ( Description ):

Wu Wangshu, born on March 1, 1993, is a Chinese artist and poet. She was born in Jurong City, Jiangsu. She graduated from Parsons with a bachelor's degree in fine arts and is currently pursuing a master's degree in VAA at NYU. Wu Wangshu's early artistic influences include traditional Chinese painting and Western greats like Wu Guanzhong, Picasso, and Monet. Her time in New York at Parsons exposed her to modern artists like Helen Frankenthaler, Josef Albers, Mark Rothko, Robert Ryman, Joan Miro, Sol Lewitt, shaping her style in abstract art and color theory.

Her art, characterized by color-field painting, explores the depth of personal and human experiences, viewing art as a profound communication form. She layers shapes of various sizes and colors onto color fields, creating canvases that communicate emotions silently. Her style, influenced by Eastern philosophies like Taoism and Buddhism, emphasizes the spiritual dimension of art and psychological exploration. Wu’s work focuses on the sensual characteristics of color and spatial relationships, avoiding representational limitations. She uses color as a means of expressing emotions, with large abstract color blocks and blurry edges in her paintings. Her approach to art is free and spontaneous, with elements in her paintings serving as part of her personal visual language, filled. With symbolic meaning and abstraction. She is currently based and working in New York City, continuing her journey of artistic exploration and expression.
