The title is taken from a quote by Paul Pitchford, a noted nutritionist and teacher that combines Western and Eastern philosophies - “Summer is a period of luxurious growth. To be in harmony with the atmosphere of summer, awaken early in the morning and reach to the sun for nourishment to flourish as the gardens do. Work, play, travel, be joyful, and grow into selfless service. The bounty of the outside world enters and enlivens us.”
A magnificent rose perfectly illustrates summer, especially Jane Fire’s digital image of a rose grown in outer space by NASA and sponsored by a perfume company capturing all the floral, woody and spiritual fragrance notes. Reaching for the nourishment of the sun are Frank Lind’s paintings of nude sun bathers in appropriated scenes from Winslow Homer and Joaquin Sorolla. Bobbie Moline-Kramer’s works on paper balance the joy of summer life with the melancholy of it passing too soon. Frances Vye Wilson’s torsos of cast sumptuous mulberry bark stand at attention in selfless service of past memories and present challenges.
The opulent and radiating semi-abstract paintings of Don Keene are 'at the ready' for summer. The grandeur of a waterfall in all its beauty and strength are captured in Deborah Freedman’s watercolor painting. Bursting across the sky at sunset are the awe-inspiring clouds of Sandra Gottlieb’s photographs. Claire McConaughy’s paintings of bucolic tress and birds capture the splendor of what can be in your own back yard. Fall into the luxurious growth of Jannell Turner’s other worldly garden painting. Martin Weinstein’s multi-paneled layered paintings revel in the glorious lush beauty of a single flower.
