The Korean Cultural Center presents “Odd Convergences: Steps/Missteps,” an exhibition that brings together 23 Los Angeles-based artists to explore space that is both visible and invisible in our relationship to life and culture.
The title does not just refer to some formal similarities between the artworks in the exhibition, but also to the artists' experimental attitudes that yield to diverse presentations. The common ground among all artists is the constant search to unravel the world and give a contemplative account of their relation to it. In examining the phenomena that affect the perceptions, senses and the artist’s understanding, these artworks embody different ways to express our complex encounters with the world.
World and culture are not always apparent to us in our casual interactions with them; their concealed aspects may not be apparent to our consciousness. To go beyond appearances, the artists in this exhibition present works in a state of flux between what is visible and invisible. At times, with blurred, unstable, fluctuating and vague formats, these works provoke thoughts and senses into a self-questioning search to arrive at new ways of recognition or new ways of understanding the objects and forms we encounter. In imaginative interrogation, these works create interplay between what is hidden and revealed through reflective materials, accidental marks, mismatched associations, traces, gestures, repetition, erasures, shadow, light and color.
